  • Crowns

In some cases, damage to a tooth is such that a dental crown is needed. Generally, this occurs when:

    1. A large section of a tooth needs to be filled
    2. Root canal treatment is performed
    3. Aesthetic reasons (cosmetic alteration, particularly of front teeth)
    4. Prevention of previously heavily filled teeth from breaking and needing to be extracted (pulled out).

Do I need a dental crown?

There are a number of factors that need to be considered when recommending a dental crown. Your dentist would be the best person in doing a thorough check-up and discussing the pros and cons of having crowns done on one or more teeth.

As a rule of thumb, if a filling is holding a tooth together more than the tooth holding the filling, the tooth will need a crown. If you’re ever in doubt regarding a recommendation of whether a tooth needs a crown, feel free to get a second opinion from one of the other dentists that work in our dental group. • Implants

Dental implants are often used when a tooth has been extracted and a new one is needed to put in its place. The implant itself looks much like a screw, but is usually made from titanium and made rough on the surface to increase the strength of bonding to the jaw bone. Affixed to the exposed end of the implant is the "abutment", which acts as a replacement tooth root. Finally, a crown, often made of porcelain and stained to match the patient's existing teeth, is fixed to the top of the abutment to complete the implant.

    When are dental implants appropriate?

Dental implants are appropriate when you having a missing tooth or teeth and want a fixed replacement, unlike dentures (plates) which are removable but more cost-effective. A bridge is a fixed replacement but requires the support of teeth adjacent to the gap, hence they can can "compromise" the adjacent teeth and result in complications of the supporting teeth down the track. Dental implants on the other hand are "free-standing" and have less risk of long term complications in general.

How can I get dental implants?

The first step is to have a comprehensive oral examination. You might want an implant, but there may be more urgent issues to attend to first that might affect whether any implant is successful at all. Call us on (08) 9301 4088, book online or contact us via other methods to find out more.
